The sparsely inhabited Takla Makan (also Taklamakan) desert is one of the largest in the world. There is no water in the desert, although mountain rainfall sustains oasis towns. Despite the common perception of a desert climate being warm, low temperatures here are known to fall below -4 °F (-20 °C).
